We get asked this a lot: “Do you make your tags from MDF?” And the answer is simple — absolutely not. Never have, never will.
At Laser Blanks, quality is everything. It’s the foundation of our business. If you’re not operating with ethics and high standards, all you’re left with is rubbish — literally. We’ve built our reputation on delivering clean, consistent, beautiful blanks that help you create a product you can be proud of. MDF just doesn’t make the cut.
What Even Is MDF?
MDF (medium-density fibreboard) is a composite wood material made from compressed wood fibres, resin, and glue. It’s cheap to manufacture, but not designed for precision work — and especially not beautiful laser cutting. Dirty laser cutting - sure... but not Laser Blanks laser cutting.
Have You Ever Seen the Soot?
If you’ve ever tried to cut MDF, you’ll know the aftermath: black soot, scorched edges, and a smell that lingers. That soot can stain your packaging, your workspace, and your customer’s storage containers. Not to mention your fingers!!
Imagine spending hours designing and applying beautiful vinyl labels, only to have the edges of your tag shed black dust or transfer marks onto a fresh white sheets or boxes. Gross.
Why We Don’t Use MDF (And Never Will)
Cheap and nasty? Not on our schedule.
We know MDF is affordable — and that’s why some use it. But it’s going to cause more problems than it solves. Why spend time crafting a gorgeous product only to use a material that ruins the final result?
- It burns when laser cut — leaving black, dusty edges that rub off and stain.
- It smells — cutting MDF releases fumes that are unpleasant and unsafe in large volumes.
- It’s not moisture-friendly — MDF warps, swells, and flakes when exposed to water or humidity (aka the kitchen and bathroom zones we’re all labelling!).
- It looks rough — compared to clean acrylic or timber, MDF just doesn’t stack up visually.
